Sound only

Keep just the sound, as an MP3.

A talk, an interview, a voice note, a song you have the right to keep: the sound without the picture.

Beside a video in the Grablet popup there is a 🎵 button: save the sound only. Grablet lifts the sound track out of the video and converts it to MP3 inside your browser. The video never leaves your computer, and nothing goes to a converter website.

How to save the sound of a video

  1. Install Grablet from the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons. There is no sign-up.
  2. Open the page and play the video for a moment.
  3. Open Grablet from the toolbar and click 🎵 beside the video. The MP3 lands in your Downloads folder.

MP3, free, with no length limit

From version 0.1.0.602 on, Grablet sets no length limit on the free MP3. Earlier versions stop it at twenty minutes. The MP3 is made with LAME, the long-standing open-source MP3 encoder, running inside your browser, at a variable bitrate of about 190 kbps: plenty for speech and for music. A long recording takes a while to convert, because the whole sound track is decoded and encoded again.

The original track, as .m4a (Pro)

Converting to MP3 always re-encodes. Grablet Pro can instead save the sound exactly as the site served it, as an .m4a, with no re-encoding and no loss. Choose it once under Settings › Sound only, saved as. Pro also saves the sound of streamed video, which the free MP3 does not.

What it won’t do

And it does not work on YouTube, Spotify or any other DRM-protected service. No setting unlocks them.
